Events at the Clarke Collection

National Heritage Week kicks off around the country from August 19th to 26th, and the Jackie Clarke Collection has a whole host of activities and events for all ages throughout the week.

Heritage Week 2018 is all about sharing stories and making connections. As part of European Year of Culture, Heritage Week is a chance to share heritage stories in new ways, with new people. The Memory Room in the Jackie Clarke Collection is an evocative space where images of Ireland’s past are projected on the walls. A Memory Pod has been created for people to record their own memories inspired by the collection. During National Heritage Week 2018 we are inviting all our local residents to come in record and share their own personal stories to help conserve our social history here in Ballina and the surrounding hinterlands.

On August 22nd and 23rd from 11am to 4pm the Collection will host two ‘Wild Child’ days. The ‘Wild Child’ concept is championed by the Heritage Council and encourages children to explore nature and natural heritage. At the Jackie Clarke Collection, children can drop by throughout the day for free nature arts and crafts, nature trail, and a visit to the ‘Bug Hotel’. This is a free drop-in event and no booking is required.

On August 23rd from 6.30pm to 8pm enjoy ‘Ordinary People, Extraordinary Stories’. This event will afford an introduction into the military archives for all those interested in Ireland's War of Independence. The workshop will be delivered by Frank Fagan on behalf of the Jackie Clarke Collection’s Volunteer programme in partnership with the Ballina Public Library and the Mayo Volunteer Centre. The audience will be given a presentation on the findings from the Military Archives from Mayo and then given the chance to research with the help of Frank the website courtesy of the Ballina Public Library. This is a free event and booking is essential.

On Friday 24th of August experience yoga in the Jackie Clarke Collection garden. Bookings can be made through the Mayo County Council Heritage Office on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

‘Circle of Sisters’ takes place in the Jackie Clarke Collection on Saturday August 25th from 2pm to 4pm. As well as honouring 100 years since women’s right to vote, the Collection will also pay tribute to the women on Cumann na mBan and other elements of women’s history through music, song, poetry, impromptu drama. Bring your picnic and enjoy lunch in the garden!
